He was discovered, dead on his feet, defiantly facing the enemy. Quite literally, his lifeless body was standing up - covered in wounds.
To prevent Durendal from falling into the hands of the enemy, he hurled it away - where it was planted into the side of a monastery - and because of his great strength, he is said to have driven it in so deeply that none could ever draw it again.
